The Contra Costa Times says:

Center REP inaugurates its new "off center" series with Caryl Churchill's stunning work A Number. Considered by many as one of the greatest living English language playwrights, Churchill has won numerous awards for her highly inventive works, and she certainly doesn't disappoint in her latest work.

Moving solidly into the 21st century, Churchill's A Number asks: "What if you suddenly found out that your father had you cloned at age 4, right before he put you up for adoption? What would you do if you realized you were a clone? And how would you handle it if you were the father and now 35 years later, the past has come back with some pretty tough questions? These are just a few of the questions that spark Churchill's latest masterpiece.

Directed by Michael Butler, the cast features two well-respected Bay Area veterans, James Carpenter and Gabriel Marin.

"You get to focus on the essentials: great actors and great material," Butler says. "And with Jim and Gabe, we're talking about a very high level of skill and accomplishment. These guys are Jedis!"

"The greatest living English language playwright" - Tony Kushner

“More than scientific morality and the widely disputed issues of cloning, what's at stake in A Number is what it means to be human. In Churchill's masterful hands, the questions raised are as engrossing as her drama is moving, disturbing and entertaining.” – Robert Hurwitt, San Francisco Chronicle

A Number deals with both the essentials and the extremities of human experience…the questions this brilliant, harrowing play asks are almost unanswerable, which is why they must be asked.” – The Sunday Times of London

“What a tremendous play this is, moving thought-provoking and dramatically thrilling” – Daily Telegraph

“It's crisp, taut and all over in 60 emotionally charged minutes. I wish it could have been longer.” - The Mirror

A Number by Caryl Churchill is the first true play of the 21st century” – Evening Standard (London)
