Center REP has fun with Chekhov

Christopher Durang proves there’s a lot of fun to be had with Chekhov in his 2012 Broadway hit “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.” But Durang (“Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You”) is a master at getting serious with comedy.

ckson Davis plays Vanya and Jamie Jones is his adopted sister Sonia, who bear many similarities with their namesakes in “Uncle Vanya” but live on a country estate transposed from “The Cherry Orchard” to contemporary Pennsylvania. Marcia Pizzo is their movie star sister Masha, returned home with young stud in tow, along with other plot elements from “The Seagull.” As seen at Berkeley Rep two years ago, Durang throws in bits of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and other classics as well.
