Stage and film costume designer Maggie Whitaker gives us a behind-the-scenes look at her designs for the costumes of The Great Leap. With the story taking place in both San Francisco and Beijing in the late 70s and 80s, Whitaker had to explore two distinct cultures and eras for authentic looks both on and off the court. "Leaning into history and pushing myself to learn more about basketball gave me an opportunity to showcase how important small details are," says Whitaker. "Not only on the stage but to the actors inhabiting these characters." These renderings are showcased in the rehearsal room so that the actors can begin to imagine their looks as they work to define their characters.

Thank you to Maggie for sharing her process and allowing us to dive deeper into Center REP production that begins performances Saturday, March 16. Click here to order your tickets today!
